The Millenium Development Goals are the UN’s recognition that there are certain standards of living which humanity has an obligation to meet. These goals represent the great ideal of a world without the worst of poverty, disease, and injustice. However, they also represent the understanding that even if we cannot eliminate a problem from the world, we are able to substantially reduce its ability to inflict pain.
Today, youth are better positioned than ever before to bring about actual change in the world. The rise and spread of the internet has allowed a generation to grow up with knowledge of how the world actually works, and its capacity for change. Today’s youth are realists but not pessimists, inspired but not naïve. Young people have an unprecedented opportunity to strike a balance between ideals and reality.
And it shows. With this enthusiasm to make the world a better place, youth have launched projects to help the desperate both domestically and around the world. Whether it’s rebulding economies or preserving cultures, youth have shown a willingness to stand up for principle of giving all of humanity a stable world in which they are free to live.
